Icon crosses are made from seasoned lime wood and kiln-dried. The boards are selected by width to ensure the greatest possible integrity. For larger sizes, the boards are joined with finger joints using a hydraulic press (thus ensuring long-lasting durability), with the pith facing the same direction (as per traditional methods). The cross is planed, sanded on both sides, and chamfered. The back and sides are painted with woodworm- and mold-resistant primer and a walnut-colored water-based varnish. The canvas is glued to the board with rabbit-skin glue, prepared with gesso and rabbit-skin glue (80% Bologna, 20% Meudon) in several layers (approximately 10), sanded, and ready to be painted.
The board is approximately 3 cm thick.
The wedges are made of beech wood and have a dovetail shape.
